COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jean Mackin from Hannaford in Manchester announced this weekend's Spirit of Giving Food Drive will help families by offering donation cards at Hannaford, Shaw's, and Walmart. A video spotlights Hamden's second annual Glen Hill Toy Drive and a Christmas tree display on Pasture Drive in Goffstown that supports local veterans.  WMUR
  • Amy Campbell from Merrimack repaired a damaged stone wall at Benson Park in Hudson and earned her Girl Scout Gold Award by learning stonemasonry and sharing erosion science with children. Her project improved the park and inspired others to learn new skills.  WMUR
  • Charlie Bristol, a longtime volunteer with the Capital Region Food Program, is named this week’s Hero Among Us for his three decades of behind-the-scenes service that keeps the program running smoothly in our community.  WMUR
  • Santa Fund donors will contribute today at local drop-off sites — supporting families with holiday gift collections. Organizers expect the donations to boost community spirit this season.  New Hampshire Union Leader

ECONOMY NEWS

  • At a discussion led by Fred Kocher on Dec. 15, experts from the New Hampshire Fiscal Policy Institute said rising food, housing, and medical care costs have outpaced earnings — stressing family budgets and prompting upcoming legislative debates on housing and childcare.  WMUR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal lawmakers are close to approving the Honoring Our Fallen Heroes Act – which would expand cancer coverage for firefighters and families – after the House passed it. The bill builds on New Hampshire laws from 2018 and was spurred by the 2023 loss of Nashua firefighter Jessica.  WMUR
  • Cold temperatures have spurred an early surge in LIHEAP applications as residents seek home heating assistance. The Community Action Partnership of Hillsborough and Rockingham Counties processed over 9,000 applications so far and teams are working quickly to help Granite Staters stay warm.  WMUR
  • New Hampshire officials introduced two reforms to the Child Care Scholarship Program to ease billing for providers. The presumptive eligibility pilot lets families receive benefits early starting Jan. 1, while a new prospective payment system began Dec. 1 to simplify weekly reporting and improve cash flow.  New Hampshire Bulletin

HEALTH NEWS

  • Genesis HealthCare, which runs local nursing homes (including facilities in this area), filed for bankruptcy to delay settlement payments for claims from resident injuries and deaths. Court records show the company still owes millions from agreements, leaving families with little recourse.  New Hampshire Bulletin

SPORTS NEWS

  • UNH men’s hockey is ranked No.20 nationally after winning five straight games — including a 3-2 overtime win against Dartmouth, which marked its first loss and kept Dartmouth at No.8.  WMUR
