COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of Greater Nashua is calling for reliable volunteers for the Winter Warming Station at the former Elm Street Middle School starting December 1 — the program will run nightly from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. until April 30. Volunteers will work two-hour shifts to monitor belongings, manage supplies, and serve refreshments to help keep homeless neighbors safe this winter — a long-term commitment that supports the community.  Nashua Ink Link
  • Meals on Wheels of Hillsborough County is holding its annual holiday gift drive this week and hopes to deliver over 1,000 gift bags. Donations will be accepted at locations in Manchester, Nashua, or Milford or through the Amazon wishlist until Thursday, Nov 13 — a chance for community support this season.  WMUR
  • On Saturday, Fairgrounds Middle School students, parents and other volunteers placed flags on veterans' graves in Nashua in observance of Veterans Day. Chief organizer Ed Jean announced the project ran short on supplies—details have not yet been revealed.  New Hampshire Union Leader

  • A 2019 video shows Lucas Houle being abused at a Dunbarton care home—records reveal hundreds of complaints, a death in Andover, and severe injuries in Lyme that point to systemic failures in oversight for New Hampshire’s disability care system.  New Hampshire Bulletin

EDUCATION NEWS

  • In celebration of National Scholarship Month, The Foundation for NH Community Colleges awarded nearly 600 scholarships totaling $487,000 for fall — an average award of $814 benefiting students including those at Nashua Community College. It began accepting applications for the spring semester on October 27 — and over 100 donor-funded scholarships are available to help reduce student debt.  Nashua Ink Link
  • Scout Caroline Martel is creating a remembrance park near a cemetery behind the Hillsborough County offices — the project will add gravel, benches, a new flagpole and lighting, and install signs with names to honor those buried without markers.  WMUR
  • New Hampshire community colleges are boosting tuition assistance for early childhood education to ease the state's child care workforce shortage—using $2.5 million in funds to cover tuition, fees, and books for approved courses and help more than 600 students take classes. The colleges are also partnering with high schools and seeking accreditation to improve teacher training and credit transfers.  New Hampshire Bulletin

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Young adults in Nashua will join a free Policy & Pints discussion at Spyglass Brewing on Tuesday, Nov. 18, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Organized by Stay Work Play, the event will let participants share ideas on housing affordability and state issues — guiding advocacy for local policies.  Nashua Ink Link
  • Sen. Jeanne Shaheen brokered a deal to end the government shutdown, but her daughter Stefany Shaheen said on Monday that she cannot support it because there is no guarantee of a vote to extend ACA tax credits—she added that their differing views will not affect their family ties.  WMUR
  • SNAP recipients in New Hampshire remain uncertain about receiving their full November benefits as conflicting messages from state and federal officials prolong the shutdown. The state Department of Health and Human Services said benefits would be issued while the federal government plans to pause payments (Gov. Kelly Ayotte expressed concern for those in need).  WMUR

  • Data released Monday by American Medical Response (AMR) shows that overdoses in Manchester and Nashua last month were recorded at their lowest level in a decade.  New Hampshire Union Leader

  • After winning seven straight games on Sunday, the New England Patriots tied for the NFL's best record at 8-2; defensive tackle Milton Williams said he hopes the team will build on this success as they will host the New York Jets Thursday night at 8 p.m.—Local news will air special live pregame coverage beginning at 7 p.m.  WMUR
