COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of Greater Nashua announced that the no barrier Pop-Up Pantries will move indoors on Nov. 3 so local residents can safely access food during winter. The program will operate Monday through Friday at five locations (Harbor Care, 45 High St.; Girls Inc., 27 Burke St.; Arlington Street Community Center, 36 Arlington St.; Nashua Community Music School, 2 Lock St.; Crossway Christian Church, 33 Pine St.) with food available at no cost.  Nashua Ink Link
  • Joan Aurora Falsani—born on June 24 in Milford—became a nurse after graduating from Milford High and Memorial School of Nursing and joined the US Army Air Corps during World War II, serving at several training sites before a radiation exposure in New Mexico led to her medical discharge on January 16. After the war, she returned to nursing in Nashua, married Frank Tafe on July 17, and lived in the community until her passing on April 1 at age 68.  Nashua Ink Link

  • A NH town keeps a witch legend alive — shops sell magical supplies and a local tradition sees Erin using a broomstick and hat on Newfound Lake. Deadwick’s Ethereal Emporium in Portsmouth offers unique mystical goods to those seeking metaphysical items.  WMUR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Heavy rain is expected later this week in New Hampshire — heavy showers will develop Thursday afternoon and peak after nightfall in areas with planned trick-or-treating. The rain is forecast to taper off by Friday morning, and gusty winds are set to continue into the weekend.  WMUR
  • A Nashua woman on vacation in Jamaica rides out Hurricane Melissa in a hotel room blocked by bed frames while relying on backup power, and her experience is being shared on TikTok. Meanwhile, Tenney Farm in Antrim is helping two longtime Jamaican workers stay connected with their families—return plans now remain uncertain.  WMUR

FINANCE NEWS

  • Tax expert Mark Steber of Jackson Hewitt said local workers should review their pay stubs and adjust their withholding now—maximizing contributions to their HSAs and 401(k)s—to lower their 2025 tax bill next spring. He warned that new law changes, including higher child credits and a raised state and local tax cap, may lead to costly mistakes if not managed properly.  WMUR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New Hampshire State Police held a morning observance yesterday to honor Staff Sgt. Jesse Sherrill, who died on October 28, 2021 when his cruiser was struck by a tractor-trailer in Portsmouth during a paving detail. Col. Mark Hall said Sherrill’s legacy continues to guide officers—his memory led to the recent expansion and renaming of the move-over law to Sherill's Law.  WMUR
  • The Legislative Fiscal Committee approved a $2 million deal with food banks to help deliver food to 75,000 families at risk of losing Supplemental Nutrition Assistance benefits. The funds will be used to keep food accessible if SNAP runs out—supporting families in need.  New Hampshire Union Leader

HEALTH NEWS

  • Catholic Medical Center broke ground on Nashua’s first freestanding emergency room at 338 Amherst Street in the former Leda Lanes bowling center—this $16 million, 11,000-square-foot facility is being renovated to open in mid-2026 and will offer 24/7 emergency care with about 30 clinical professionals. The new emergency room is expected to bring economic benefits to the city by adding jobs and expanding access to full-service care.  Nashua Ink Link
  • A Concord man, Tim Andrews, who was the second in the country to receive a gene-edited pig kidney transplant, had the kidney removed last week after its function declined. He is now back on dialysis and on the transplant waiting list—hoping to find a donor as 100,000 people in the country wait for a kidney.  WMUR
