- ➤ Frank Edward Tafe, a Nashua native who served on the USS Iowa in World War II, saw heavy fighting and witnessed terrible scenes—including a moment when a seagull caused a mishap that got him in trouble. - ➤ At the 25th Annual Dinner Auction Gala on October 25—in Nashua—the Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter raised over $250K to support client services and buy a refrigerated mobile food van that will deliver meals to needy families. - ➤ Manchester-based Suzie Sullivan hosted a lemonade stand fundraiser that raised about $1,300 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation to help sick kids enjoy being kids. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Nashua schools have seen a drop in enrollment from 13,469 in 2000 to 9,768 in 2024 and an increase of 398 special education students from 2014 to 2024. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Tim Andrews from Concord had his pig kidney removed last week after it lasted a record 271 days, and he will resume dialysis and remain on the donor kidney list. Massachusetts General Hospital said it will perform a third genetically edited pig kidney transplant later this year—furthering research on treatments for kidney failure. WMUR
- ➤ Christina Hurley, founder and executive director of Less Leg More Heart, shared how her own amputation led her to start a nonprofit that gives tailored support to amputees—offering mentorship, education, and periodic check-ins to help with daily challenges. - ➤ Dr. Mary Chamberlin, an oncologist at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, has been named the latest Hero Among Us for her work on one of the top fundraising teams at the Prouty event—she raised nearly $22,000 to support patient programs and cancer education. WMUR
