- ➤ At 6 years old, Oaklyn Neilson has climbed all 48 four-thousand-foot peaks in New Hampshire and built a strong bond with his mom, Sarah, after starting his hikes at age 3. - ➤ Tonight, locals celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by sampling authentic dishes from Colombia, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico—served by brothers running three popular Mexican restaurants and hosted at venues including the Manchester Millyard Museum. WMUR
- ➤ A Nashua native, retired educator and self-appointed doodler has published a memoir that brings the post World War II era to life by recounting childhood games with friends and two brothers, penny candy purchases from corner markets and local football matches—capturing the spirit of a typical Nashua neighborhood. - ➤ The state education department said that federal funding was not affected by the shutdown because money was paid ahead for schools—covering Title I-A, Title II-A, and special education programs. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ New Hampshire today remains dry and cool with fall-like conditions, and a hard freeze is expected this morning that may end the growing season. Forecasts indicate that a coastal storm could bring rain on Sunday afternoon into Monday—its track and intensity remain uncertain. WMUR
- ➤ A severe drought has triggered early colorful foliage as University of New Hampshire forester Steven Roberge explained the trees shut down sooner when they lack water — residents can view vibrant fall colors this weekend. WMUR
- ➤ This holiday weekend will be busy for tourists who will travel to New Hampshire to view fall colors as the forecast shows mostly dry weather until rain on Monday — many visitors plan to see the peak leaves. In the Lakes Region, the leaves will be at their peak and colors will continue to develop in the Merrimack Valley and Seacoast — which will draw enthusiasts to scenic drives. WMUR
- ➤ A new U.S. Drought Monitor report shows that more than 52% of New Hampshire is in extreme drought that now covers the North Country, White Mountains, Upper Valley, and parts of western New Hampshire—areas like Merrimack and Monadnock are particularly hard hit while Hillsborough County faces a moderate drought. The report also noted that rain is expected on Sunday and Monday to help ease the conditions in coastal areas. WMUR
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Taylor Caswell, commissioner of the Department of Business and Economic Affairs, resigned after failing to secure the Executive Council's support—his resignation will take effect on October 17. When asked about a possible connection to BEA’s assistance in selling a Nashua warehouse to a Chinese company, Attorney General John Formella declined to comment. WMUR
- ➤ New Hampshire Supreme Court Justice Anna Barbara Hantz Marconi had her license reinstated after she entered a no-contest plea to a misdemeanor charge Tuesday, and her leave was lifted so she can resume judicial duties. She was accused of misusing her position to influence a criminal investigation involving her husband by meeting with former Gov. Chris Sununu, and his trial is scheduled for November. WMUR
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ New Hampshire saw a 33.4 percent drop in drug-related deaths from 2023 to 2024, the largest decline in a decade according to the New Hampshire Fiscal Policy Institute.
