CRIME NEWS

  • A court issued an injunction Thursday barring former Market Basket executives Joe Schmidt and Tom Gordon from entering stores and offices after they visited 25 locations over six days — they were fired three weeks ago and have said they will follow the rule.  WMUR
  • Erik Hans Heaney, a Merrimack man, was charged with stealing a chalice from a Nashua church after he said he wanted something shiny and cool—like a cup.  New Hampshire Union Leader
  • Body camera video shows that law enforcement arrested David Allsop, a 52-year-old Southwest Airlines pilot from Bedford, for DUI at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport in January as he was scheduled to fly passengers from Savannah to Chicago — his FAA license was revoked and criminal charges remain pending.  WMUR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Nashua native Dug North recalled his first taste of survival skills from a college documentary on the Bushmen and later applied his training on Season 12 of Alone in the Great Karoo Desert where he fainted from dehydration—he said he learned valuable lessons and will post new YouTube videos while preparing for a training expedition in Haida Gwaii in September.  Nashua Ink Link

EDUCATION NEWS

  • New Hampshire has cut funding for colleges and the University of New Hampshire raised in-state tuition while cutting services and jobs. Parents and students will now face nearly $40,000 a year for college—raising concerns about affordability in the state.  New Hampshire Bulletin
  • New Hampshire ranks last in the nation for public higher education funding—an analysis by the New Hampshire Fiscal Policy Institute showed the state spent just over $4,600 per full-time student in 2024. The report warned that the new state budget may cut funds further, which could push up tuition and lower enrollment.  WMUR
  • New Hampshire schools are testing water for lead and using the state’s Get the Lead Out program—575 of 633 schools are enrolled—to meet safety standards before the school year starts. Epsom Central School fixed high readings by replacing fixtures and adding water filters with an $11,000 grant.  WMUR

  • The filing period for Nashua's municipal election starts Tuesday, August 26 and ends Friday, September 5. A drawing for ballot positions will be held Wednesday, September 10 at 10 a.m.—residents can send in questions for candidates through an online form.  Nashua Ink Link
