BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Commissioner D.J. Bettencourt said new laws now require insurers to notify the department before pulling out of coverage lines so policyholders can prepare, and he noted that New Hampshire was ranked first in overall health care quality & affordability with the lowest average premiums. The law will also stop surprise ambulance billing by raising reimbursements for ambulance trips next year. WMUR
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Goffstown man (50-year-old Cory Nickerson) allegedly forced his way through a secure door at about 3:45 p.m. Saturday and attacked two Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office dispatchers before fleeing, but police took him into custody around 3 p.m. Sunday and he now faces charges including disobeying a police officer, criminal threatening, false imprisonment, simple assault, and criminal mischief. - ➤ Hudson police arrested a 24-year-old man for a sexual assault reported in March—further investigation is underway. New Hampshire Union Leader
- ➤ A Nashua man was arrested on Friday on accusations of intentionally hitting someone with his vehicle in Hudson—police have launched an investigation into the incident. New Hampshire Union Leader
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Four school districts, the New Hampshire Education Association, and DEI advocates are suing the state over a law—part of the new budget signed by Gov. Ayotte that took effect July 1—that bans diversity, equity and inclusion programs in schools and public agencies and warns it may cut millions in funding and halt efforts to boost female representation. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A new study says a giant hot rock blob under New Hampshire helps hold up the Appalachian Mountains despite millions of years of erosion—officials believe it formed about 180 million years ago when the continent split from Africa. Researchers add the blob, called the Northern Appalachian Anomaly, is moving slowly and will reach New York in about 10 to 15 million years—raising questions about its long-term impact on the range. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Between 1969 and 1971, the Nashua Police Department launched New Hampshire's only municipal training program for new officers — a 160-hour course of classroom lessons and street work — and started the Junior Police League along with a drug abuse program.
