COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Planet Fitness locations in New Hampshire will host the 'Got Sneakers' drive from August 9—September 8 to collect gently used sneakers that will benefit local Boys & Girls Clubs and support recycling efforts. Donated sneakers will be processed by GotSneakers— a national group that recycles footwear to reduce landfill waste. Nashua Ink Link
- ➤ Summer remains lively with local events this weekend as the 68th Annual Antiques Show runs at the DoubleTree in Manchester from today until August 9, a free youth wrestling clinic takes place in Nashua on Saturday morning, and a Music+Jazz Festival offers live performances on Hanover Street from noon until 9 p.m. Additional events include a charcuterie board workshop in Bedford on August 10 and Sunday Cinema Classics at the Nashua Public Library+ planners are also marking Mahrajan for August 15 to 17 and Glendi for Sept. 12 to 14. - ➤ In January, NF North America—a U.S. subsidiary of Nongfu Spring—bought a vacant 337,391-square-foot building on a 23-acre industrial site at 80 Northwest Boulevard for $67 million, sparking online speculation and security concerns among local lawmakers. However, Nashua Mayor Jim Donchess and Pennichuck Water Works officials said the transaction was routine and does not affect essential services. Nashua Ink Link
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Starting in late August, high school sophomores, juniors and seniors can enroll in UNH Early College Online, a program in partnership with VLACS that lets them earn four college credits per 16-week course in nine subjects. Students may earn up to 28 credits while paying $150 per course — a cost-effective option compared to regular college tuition. New Hampshire Bulletin
- ➤ Some Granite Staters have raised concerns about the Education Freedom Account program's spending when the Children's Scholarship Fund announced it reached a 10,000-student cap after more than 11,000 students applied before July 31 — Megan Tuttle of NEA New Hampshire said taxpayer money going to private and religious schools is not tracked clearly. The voucher program, launched in 2021 for students ages 5 to 20, will expand by 25% next year to serve roughly 2,500 more families. WMUR

- ➤ The New Hampshire Attorney General's Office is expanding its Cold Case Unit by hiring two full-time investigators—Todd Flanagan, a longtime Department of Justice deputy, and Bruce Foremny, experienced in cold case work in Arizona—to focus on long-unsolved homicide cases, with funding from Gov. Kelly Ayotte’s budget proposal aimed at providing closure for victims’ families. WMUR
- ➤ A new state law will impose stricter penalties for buyers of sex including a $500 fine starting January 1+the fine revenue will support state efforts to help survivors of human trafficking. WMUR

- ➤ Dr. Benjamin Chan, New Hampshire’s state epidemiologist, stressed the need for flu and measles vaccines and continued COVID-19 precautions as he monitors low activity today while preparing for expected increases in respiratory illnesses later this fall and winter—especially for those most at risk. - ➤ Rural health care in New Hampshire is shrinking as HealthFirst cuts services and closes its Canaan facility—30% to 40% of its patients rely on Medicaid—and senators warned yesterday that changes in work requirements and expired subsidies could leave many without insurance.
