COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Tom Blonski, the CEO of Catholic Charities New Hampshire, met with Pope Leo XIV during a private audience at the Vatican — the pontiff offered words of encouragement for the charity’s work.  WMUR
  • United Way of Greater Nashua is calling on residents to volunteer for the annual Kevin Slattery Memorial Food Drive, which will occur on Friday, May 30 and Saturday. Volunteers will help collect food donations to support local families in need.  New Hampshire Union Leader
  • Project COZY will take place at the UU Church of Nashua (58 Lowell St) from Nov. 5 to Nov. 11, where community volunteers will build custom window inserts designed to cut heating costs by up to 20%. Households must sign up for free window measurements by Sept. 25.  Nashua Ink Link

CULTURE NEWS

  • A World War I shipwreck has become part of a local family's heritage after records show that the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Tampa, following nine days at sea, safely escorted a convoy and rested on Sept. 26, 1918.  New Hampshire Union Leader

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Representatives from the U.S. Army New England Recruiting Battalion hosted New Hampshire’s first U.S. Army Educator Forum in April, bringing together over 60 educators to explore stronger student career pathways.  New Hampshire Union Leader

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Nashua’s newly formed Environmental Justice Group - led by Marina Vaz of the Conservation Law Foundation - is gathering survey responses to pinpoint local gaps in areas like rough sidewalks, pollution and tree canopy cover. The survey takes 5-10 minutes and welcomes input from residents, workers and students.  Nashua Ink Link

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The House Commerce Committee rejected Gov. Ayotte’s request to bring a children’s mental health coverage bill to a vote on Wednesday—keeping it for further study—and state lawmakers warn that more delays could risk needed care.  WMUR
  • Some states have paused gas taxes to ease rising prices, but Gov. Kelly Ayotte said New Hampshire will keep its nearly 24-cent tax to fund roads & bridges. Rep. Chris Pappas introduced a bill in Congress in March that would pause the federal 18-cent tax through Oct. 1.  WMUR

SPORTS NEWS

  • The New Hampshire Fisher Cats won Tuesday at Hadlock Field 3-2 over the Sea Dogs, highlighted by a go-ahead homer by Parker & consecutive quality starts from McElvain that marked a career first. The win helped cap a strong outing in a key series opener.  Nashua Ink Link
  • Nashua South girls lacrosse beat Nashua North (14-3) today in the Battle of the Bridge rivalry. Sophomore Carly Benzekri scored six goals and reached 100 career points as the team will host Pinkerton Friday at 6:00 p.m.  Nashua Ink Link
  • Nashua North upset Nashua South 14-13 in a thrilling boys lacrosse game on Thursday, May 7 with Nico Bottari's final minute goal. North travels to Bishop Guertin on Friday at 4:00 p.m. & South faces DII Alvirne at 6:30 p.m.  Nashua Ink Link
