CRIME NEWS

  • Police say Litchfield motorcyclist Jeffrey Day, 57, died at the scene after being hit intentionally during a road rage incident by drunk driver John Burke, 19—Burke is ordered to stay in custody until a hearing next week while an SUV driver who tried to avoid the crash was treated for injuries.  WMUR

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Chinese Culture Society of Greater Nashua has served local Chinese residents for 30 years by offering events that started as small backyard gatherings and now draw hundreds to celebrate and learn about Chinese culture—members say anyone interested is welcome to join.  WMUR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Senator Maggie Hassan recognized Nashua high school students Meenakshi Dwaraka and Salome Castillo Valencia for starting a free coding class for local third to fifth graders, naming them April's Granite Staters of the Month. The girls taught the growing class at their community center (where kids learned block coding, basic robotics and computer safety) and helped fill a gap in early computer skill education.  Nashua Ink Link

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The New Hampshire Senate passed a bill this week that would let the state treasurer invest in digital assets and precious metals if they meet a $500 billion market capitalization—currently only Bitcoin qualifies. Lawmakers are divided on the idea and the bill is set to move to Governor Kelly Ayotte’s desk soon.  WMUR
  • On Thursday, the Senate voted to refer a bipartisan bill on creating a paint recycling program back to committee due to concerns about added fees-for cans. The program would let retailers serve as free drop-off sites to safely dispose of paint and help keep harmful chemicals out of landfills.  New Hampshire Bulletin
  • State Senate Finance Committee will host its final public budget hearing Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Representatives Hall at the State House— giving Nashua residents a chance to share opinions on the spending plan— as the committee works on changes before sending its version to the House.  New Hampshire Bulletin

HEALTH NEWS

  • CDC officials said 216 American children have died from the flu this season — the highest number since the swine flu pandemic 15 years ago, with 11 more deaths than last season. New Hampshire health officials reported one local child died and 78 total flu-related deaths as of the week of April 19 while experts suggest that lower vaccination rates among children may be a factor.  WMUR

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • 92-year-old Bob MacLaren stays busy by training his dogs at All Dogs Gym every Tuesday and sledding down a hill carved with his snowblower for his grandkids—his video received thousands of likes. His wife Barbara, nearly 80, says he challenges himself despite health issues—proving that even in their 90s, people can learn new tricks.  WMUR
