COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation board announced Shawn V. Morehead as its new president and CEO. She will begin on July 13 in Concord, succeeding Richard Ober and leading a foundation that has given over $1 billion in grants since 1962.  Nashua Ink Link
  • Today the Spartans Annual Spring Carnival opens at Nashua High School South, offering rides and family-friendly attractions by Fiesta Shows as part of a multi-day event running until May 2.  Nashua Ink Link
  • Local groups offer free or low-cost prom attire for students as the dance nears, with programs in Manchester, Exeter and Salem providing dresses, suits, accessories and free alterations on a sliding scale. Some organizers also donate proceeds to support students in need (for example, helping Exeter student Oscar Grossman).  WMUR

  • The Nash Casino recently awarded $198,508 when blackjack player Gianna Sandelli, a Lowell resident, placed a $5 side bet to trigger the progressive jackpot system — following a record win by Anthony Hom in late February.  Nashua Ink Link
  • Costco is considering a new store at Seacoast Landing, a plaza replacing the Mall at Fox Run in Newington. If approved, demolition in June will lead to construction and an expected November opening that could create about 250 jobs & boost local business.  WMUR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Amelia DeSousa, a Nashua North High School student, praised Symphony NH’s Passions concert for its expressive performances under music director finalist Tianhui Ng, noting that the program included pieces such as Deep Forest and Piano Concerto No.2.   • Double Midnight Comics will host its Free Comic Book Day Extravaganza on Saturday, May 2 at its Manchester location, featuring comic book giveaways, costume contests, and raffles & a storewide sale.   • Engineering students from across North America gathered at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon on Wednesday morning to build + race hybrid and electric cars, showcasing innovative designs in a competitive event that tested their skills.  New Hampshire Union Leader

  • At Delta Dental Stadium in Manchester, Fisher Cats pitchers Jackson Wentworth, Nate Garkow, Irv Carter and Kai Peterson threw a combined no-hitter against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies on Tuesday night. This game marked the fifth no-hitter in New Hampshire history.  WMUR
