Good morning, Nashua. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 11th of April.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Record Store Day is set for Saturday, April 12 as New Hampshire’s indie record shops prepare for a busy day with exclusive vinyl releases and special reissues drawing large crowds—Pitchfork Records in Concord expects collectors to line up as early as 5:30 a.m. for offerings like Taylor Swift’s single with Post Malone and free coffee—while other stores join the celebration.  Granite Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Riyah Patel, a 17-year-old who founded New American Scholars at 15, has been tutoring refugee students in Manchester and is now recruiting more tutors to expand the program — she received grants to purchase iPads and develop a personalized curriculum for each child.  WMUR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New Hampshire lawmakers and lobbyists are debating House Bill 324 which would establish a process to remove books deemed obscene or harmful from school libraries. The sponsor, Rep. Glenn Cordelli, read an excerpt from The Perks of Being a Wallflower (a book listed several times by the ALA) while opponents like Sen. Debra Altschiller and the American Federation of Teachers argue that the excerpt lacks full context.  WMUR
  • Yesterday, the New Hampshire House passed a budget bill that cuts Gov. Kelly Ayotte’s proposal by $643 million and sets spending at $15.36 billion over two years — lawmakers said the cuts target unneeded agencies and add new revenue from fees and taxes. The measures now go to the Senate, and Ayotte said she will work with lawmakers to restore funding for key programs like community mental health centers and the Office of the Child Advocate.  New Hampshire Bulletin
  • On Thursday, the House voted 193 to 177 to kill a bipartisan bill that would have required doctors, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants treating patients under 18 to complete one hour of approved child abuse training. Supporters said the training was needed to catch missed abuse cases while opponents argued that boards and employers already require it — and that a free online course makes the new rule unnecessary — so the measure was dropped.  New Hampshire Bulletin

HEALTH NEWS

  • Cabot Creamery is recalling more than 1,700 pounds of eight-ounce sea-salted extra creamy premium butter after tests showed elevated levels of coliform bacteria in products sold in seven states including New Hampshire. The FDA and Cabot announced the recall Wednesday — only 17 items were sold in Vermont while 99.5% of the affected product was recovered before reaching consumers, and the butter’s best-by date is Sept. 9th.  WMUR
