COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Special Olympian Scott McCullough was honored Tuesday by Mayor Jim Donchess for 40 years of representing Nashua in Special Olympics—he returned from Italy after competing in the Winter World Games and winning bronze medals in snowshoeing events. McCullough, a Nashua native who said he felt lonely before joining the games, was also congratulated by Governor Kelly Ayotte and Congresswoman Maggie Goodlander—he expressed his gratitude to all the staff for their support.  Nashua Ink Link
  • Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter and United Way of Greater Nashua announced the spring schedule for the pop-up pantries serving local residents. Since 2020, the pantries have served 40-072 clients and officials said they will help families this season.  New Hampshire Union Leader

CRIME NEWS

  • A police report said that ATF agents working with ICE had orders to secure people at Nashua Circuit Court for arraignments or hearings—during a DUI case a man was detained and an older man sustained minor injuries as witnesses questioned if too much force was used.  WMUR
  • Naxin Wu was sentenced to 33 months in federal court for her role in a gift card scam (15,000 fraudulent cards worth $5 million) that sent stolen cards to China and helped buy Apple devices after Salem police found millions in iPhones and iPads, while two others in New Hampshire pleaded guilty (cards came from Target, Sephora, and Lowe’s).  WMUR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • FIRST Robotics Team Phoenix earned a spot at the FIRST World Championship in Houston from April 16th to 19th after finishing 10th at the New England District Championship. The Nashua team also won the Imagery Award for its robot design + it will compete against teams from around the world to show its skills.  Nashua Ink Link

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan held a press conference on April 7th in Manchester to object to the planned reduction of over 80,000 VA jobs that would cut healthcare services for veterans. They said the cuts to revert staffing to pre-Biden levels will hurt many veterans filing claims under the PACT Act—actions they urged the administration to reverse.  Nashua Ink Link
  • Today, Nashua DPW is fixing potholes caused by freeze-thaw cycles on side streets during low-traffic hours and on main roads during the day—using a two-person crew that applies 3,000 pounds of asphalt daily over the next 6 to 8 weeks.   • Granite State Landfill LLC (a subsidiary of Casella Waste Systems) filed a legal complaint on Tuesday (April 8) in Merrimack County Superior Court after its permit for a proposed Dalton landfill near Forest Lake was denied as dormant. The company says the rule used to deny the permit goes beyond the department’s power and it will appeal the decision while keeping the project on track.  New Hampshire Bulletin
  • The Nashua Ethics Review Committee cleared Mayor Jim Donchess of ethics violations when he used city funds to cover legal fees, ruling his actions were within city conduct rules.  New Hampshire Union Leader

HEALTH NEWS

  • First responders reported that suspected opioid overdoses dropped 14% in March across Nashua and Manchester due to increased Narcan, although Nashua saw a rise in opioid-related deaths with five in March and a projection of up to 49 by the end of this year if the trend continues—city officials are forming an Opioid Fatality Review Committee to examine missed lifesaving opportunities.  WMUR
