- ➤ Girls at Work, a Manchester nonprofit, empowers girls ages 8 to 14 to learn construction skills by using power tools that challenge the idea these tools are only for men—its programs after school, in middle school, and at summer camp also offer support with essentials like clothing and groceries. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Teachers and staff held a protest outside Nashua North on Monday, saying the proposed 3% school budget increase would cut nearly 70 teaching positions and cost the district $1 million. Union president Gary Hoffman said a 4% increase was needed to cover unexpected bus and program costs — and he warned that the cuts would worsen staffing shortages before the budget vote on Thursday. - ➤ The New Hampshire Department of Labor is firing Richard Brown, an administrative judge hired four months after his release from prison, after his Florida criminal record — including charges of fraud, money laundering and theft — came to light today. The department said it followed standard procedures and is taking steps to remove him from the role. WMUR
- ➤ House lawmakers in Concord advanced a plan to cut nearly $21 million from corrections that will remove 191 positions — layoffs are planned for July — and officials warn the measure could risk safety in state prisons. WMUR
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Covid-era public health funding in Nashua ended on March 24, cutting a planned $317,216 that supported community health workers and other public health measures. The city’s public health director said that after budget changes sustain staff until June 30, the loss of at least two community health positions may occur—impacting local recovery efforts—.
