- ➤ The Nashua Senior Activity Center received a $763 check from GenXpo (organized by the City’s Economic Development office) on March 2 that will help cover costs for its third annual Kickoff to Summer Barbecue on June 19 as rising food costs made it harder for seniors to attend events. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ In federal court Thursday, 18-year-old John Vierra was sentenced to three months in jail, 100 hours of community service and two years of supervised release for his role in robbing a Nashua mail carrier caught on doorbell camera video last April—his judge said the light sentence was meant to give him a chance to learn from his mistake while co-defendant Tyler Savignon is expected to plead guilty next week. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On March 25th, the House Finance Division I approved a state budget amendment that will cap rooms and meals tax revenue for municipalities at $137 million a year for the next two years and will add about $11 million to the general fund; Chair Rep. Dan McGuire said towns will receive the same revenue even if tax collections do not grow. Two committee members raised concerns that municipalities might need to raise additional local taxes if revenues fall short—further details on the amendment remain to be written. Nashua Ink Link
- ➤ State representatives voted Wednesday to change the state primary election from the first Tuesday in September to the first Tuesday in June — a measure that passed without debate — and the bill will now move to the New Hampshire Senate with Gov. Kelly Ayotte supporting the change. WMUR
- ➤ Gov. Kelly Ayotte and legislative budget writers are scrambling as the federal treasury begins clawing back up to $80M in unspent COVID funds. State officials plan to adjust the budget + meet the federal order to return the funds. New Hampshire Union Leader
- ➤ The Nashua Public Library is asking for public input through an online survey as part of a study to decide whether to renovate in place, build new on the parking lot, or demolish and rebuild its 55-year-old building, following a 2022 assessment that estimated repairs would cost between ($16 and $19 million for fixes; $23 and $29 million for full renovations). DesignLAB architects (a women-owned firm from Boston) are gathering data and will present their program in April and cost estimates in May, with a final decision coming in July. Nashua Ink Link
