ECONOMY NEWS

  • Economic development director Liz Hannum presented a new plan for economic mobility at the Greater Nashua Chamber of Commerce State of the City Luncheon on March 19, focusing on workforce development, small business support, local housing and child care programs (including a shared facility for child care providers and a free financial empowerment center planned for the library). She also outlined branding and placemaking improvements for downtown and the riverfront (with upgrades to the library walk alleyway, new signage and enhanced access to parks) that aim to attract businesses and keep residents working in Nashua.  Nashua Ink Link

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Nashua library will host a free, family-friendly Sustainability Fair on Saturday, April 26 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.—attendees will explore a live exhibit of 24 native caterpillars from The Caterpillar Lab, join a community art project, shop at an Eco-Market, view an electric vehicle showcase, learn about local sustainability resources, receive free seeds, and take part in the City Nature Challenge.  Nashua Ink Link

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New Hampshire state representatives voted to table a controversial doctor-assisted suicide bill on Thursday (183-182), stopping a measure that would have allowed doctors to give terminally ill patients a prescription for lethal medication with fewer than six months to live.  WMUR
  • The New Hampshire Senate passed a fast-tracked bill on Thursday—sending it to the governor’s desk where Gov. Kelly Ayotte is expected to sign it. The law requires people charged with violent felony offenses, including sex crimes against a child, to appear before a judge for bail hearings.  WMUR
  • U.S. postal workers in Manchester and Concord protested Thursday over plans that may let private companies run the mail service, a change they said could raise prices and cut jobs in rural areas. Lawmakers and union leaders urged that the service stay public to serve every part of the state.  WMUR
