COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Shoppers rushed into Market Basket on Friday as they stocked up ahead of a weekend storm forecast to drop over a foot of snow. Many filled carts with essentials (toilet paper included) to be ready for a few snowed-in days. WMUR
- ➤ Nashua's soup kitchen and shelter are extending hours to offer hot meals and warm supplies (gloves, socks and hats) as the cold weekend approaches. Shelter director Jane Goodman said winter overflow will open Saturday and Sunday while volunteers prepare breakfast and additional resources to keep residents safe. WMUR
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The House Education Policy and Administration committee voted Jan. 22 to not move forward with House Bill 1507, which would have mandated 45 to 60 minutes of recess for K-6 students. Supporters praise increased play time for its benefits, but others warn it could require extra staff+ raise costs. Nashua Ink Link

- ➤ Today, Senator Jeanne Shaheen nominated 46 New Hampshire students for appointments to four U.S. Service Academies for the Class of 2031, including local scholars from Nashua. The academies will review the candidates’ applications as they move through the selection process. Nashua Ink Link
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Medical experts warn that heavy snowfall and cold weather can raise the risk of dying by 34% and cause a 6% increase in heart attack hospitalizations for men. Dr. Miriam Fischer advises Nashua residents to warm up and shovel snow in small increments to ease the strain on their hearts. WMUR
- ➤ Animal services advises pet owners to keep pets indoors and on a leash during cold weather ahead of a winter storm. They recommend wiping pets' paws to remove harmful salt and chemicals and suggest using pet coats to protect short-haired breeds while seeking foster families to care for extra animals. WMUR

- ➤ Outdoor enthusiasts enjoyed runs on Cannon Mountain Friday before an extreme cold warning takes effect today; officials advise bundling up with extra layers and face protection as wind chills may reach 35 below zero, a drop that can cause frostbite in 10 minutes. WMUR
- ➤ Patriots players and coaches are NFL award finalists, with Drake Maye up for AP MVP and Offensive Player of the Year, Treveyon Henderson for Offensive Rookie, and head coach Mike Vrabel for Coach of the Year; award winners will be announced on Feb. 5. WMUR
