CULTURE NEWS

  • NASA held its annual Day of Remembrance on Thursday to honor space crew members lost during missions, including New Hampshire teacher Christa McAuliffe who died when Challenger exploded on Jan. 28, 1986. The event also honored crews from Apollo 1 and Columbia.  WMUR
  • The Finance Committee approved a $105,000 contract on Wednesday to paint a 70-foot mural on the Water Street wall at the new Riverwalk and Renaissance Park plus artist J. Graham was chosen from 21 applicants; the mural now awaits final approval by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen.  Nashua Ink Link

  • United Way of Greater Nashua announced its second annual Reading United Day of Caring, a community-wide literacy initiative during Read Across America Week to celebrate local reading efforts.  New Hampshire Union Leader

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Meteorologist Mike Haddad says an arctic front will bring tonight's flurries, bitterly cold winds Friday night, and heavy, fluffy snow Sunday afternoon into Monday over the area, so residents should prepare for slippery roads & icy conditions.  WMUR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Community Power Coalition of New Hampshire briefed the Board of Aldermen Tuesday night on Nashua Community Power's upcoming rate increase. Rates will rise to 14.663 cents per kWh from Feb. 1 through July 31, 2026 (reflecting service costs and reserve adjustments), adding about $21 to monthly bills.  Nashua Ink Link

HEALTH NEWS

  • FEMA advises residents to keep a three-day supply of easy-to-eat foods (such as canned tuna, chicken, beans, and peanut butter) and one gallon of water per person per day in case a winter storm knocks out power. Local officials remind residents to check their pantries before shopping and use outdoor methods safely if food needs warming.  WMUR
  • New Hampshire safety officials warn locals to use extra care with space heaters during bitterly cold weather this weekend. Fire Marshal Sean Toomey advises plugging heaters directly into outlets and checking smoke and carbon monoxide detectors (to reduce the risk of fire).  WMUR
  • Blood is in critical supply as Kristi's Krew will host the annual Memorial Blood Drive in honor of Kristi Cunha on Feb. 26 from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Parrish of the Resurrection located at 149 Broad Street in Nashua.  Nashua Ink Link
