COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Special Olympics volunteer Mike Carignan, who built strong bonds with athletes while in law enforcement, is proud of organizing local events such as a softball tournament and ocean outings; his efforts give back to the community (sponsored by AmeriHealth Caritas).  WMUR
  • Special Olympics New Hampshire is hosting its Penguin Plunge (first weekend of February) at Hampton Beach to raise funds for local athletes. Approximately 400 high school students will plunge Saturday and around 750 participants will join Sunday, setting a spirited tone for the new year.  WMUR
  • A Nashua florist has sparked a community event by inviting residents to repurpose glass vases — a creative cabinet cleanout that promotes environmental stewardship and care.  New Hampshire Union Leader

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A popular women's clothing chain with over 25 years in business announced it will close all its stores nationwide (including three in NH) and liquidate its remaining inventory. The decision will soon affect local shoppers.  New Hampshire Union Leader

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Young residents (ages 18–39) are invited to enter the '2030 Vision for New Hampshire' Essay Contest, which welcomes ideas on topics like housing affordability and community development; submissions must be sent as a PDF by February 8 with winners announced on March 24 and cash prizes awarded.  Nashua Ink Link
  • Fifth grader Liv Crete-Sayer from Boscawen Elementary is set to be New Hampshire's 2026 kid governor; she plans to educate school-aged peers about the risks of smoking, vaping and drugs through classroom presentations, drug-free courses and educational booklets.  WMUR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Monday night, northern lights lit up communities from Dunbarton to Salisbury after a solar flare caused a coronal mass ejection; the National Weather Service issued a geomagnetic storm watch and advised observers to use cellphone time-lapse (which may capture colors) in open areas between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.  WMUR
  • Overnight snowfall left some roads and parking lots slick in southern areas, especially near downtown (Main and Lowell Street), where plows cleared streets while sidewalks remain icy. Drivers are urged to slow down today as light, fluffy snow may eventually pack to form black ice.  WMUR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Senator Shaheen was honored on Monday in Manchester by the National Cultural Diversity Awareness Council for signing MLK Jr. Day into law nearly 30 years ago (her final MLK Day in office as she plans to retire next year).  WMUR

HEALTH NEWS

  • Suzanna's Kitchen is recalling nearly 14,000 pounds of grilled chicken products produced on Oct. 14 because a third-party lab found potential Listeria contamination. No illnesses have been reported and consumers with questions should call the USDA hotline.  WMUR

SPORTS NEWS

  • Patriots fans celebrated a big win over the Texans on Sunday with a full house at Gillette Stadium+local supporters in Manchester joined in the excitement, and many expect the young team to reach the Super Bowl if they win next week.  WMUR
