COMMUNITY NEWS

  • AARP New Hampshire is accepting applications for its 2026 Community Challenge grant program until March 4, 5:00 p.m. The program funds projects to improve public places, transportation, housing, digital connections + disaster resilience, and all work must finish by December 15.  Nashua Ink Link
  • Nashua Public Library continues to face repairs after needle and soft waste misuse caused repeated clogs & a major sewer backup that closed the building for three days last December; Director Jennifer McCormack said new signage and public health education are in place to curb the issue.  Nashua Ink Link

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Monday, Jan. 5, the Board of Education held its first meeting in Nashua during an organizational session that elected Jennifer Bishop as chair and Heather Raymond as clerk (committee assignments were also announced).  Nashua Ink Link
  • New Hampshire lawmakers passed a bill on Wednesday to create a revolving loan fund to support Claremont schools facing financial hardship. Lawmakers say the fund will help keep schools open, though debates continue over interest rates (and school choice measures).  WMUR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A winter weather advisory was in effect until 10 a.m. Wednesday as a mix of snow, sleet, and light freezing rain made roads icy and delayed school starts. Conditions improved by the afternoon and showers are forecast Friday and Saturday.  WMUR

FINANCE NEWS

  • A November analysis by the Urban Institute showed 23% of New Hampshire households lacked $2,000 in emergency savings in 2022, leaving over 120,000 families at risk of financial shocks & with 32 percent of Manchester residents and over 30 percent in rural areas similarly affected.  Nashua Ink Link

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Kelly Ayotte announced the appointment of Donnalee Lozeau as Director of the GO-NORTH office & she will oversee the Rural Health Transformation Program funded with over $204 million for 2026 while reporting directly to the Governor.  Nashua Ink Link
  • Since Jan. 1, a new state law (RSA 201-D:1) now lets parents access minor library records, and Nashua Public Library is updating its procedures including a new form and ID requirements to verify parent status; library director Jen McCormack said the policies aim to balance informed consent with teen confidentiality.  Nashua Ink Link

HEALTH NEWS

  • Consumer Reports offers practical tips for safer winter driving today. Michael Crossen advises motorists to check tire pressure (with proper tread and functioning windshield wipers) and reduce speed on icy roads while planning stops for electric vehicles in cold conditions.  WMUR
  • NH Navigator offers free health insurance navigation services to residents through the Foundation for Healthy Communities, and open enrollment will end Jan. 15. Residents can access additional help before the deadline.  New Hampshire Union Leader

  • In Hooksett, Common Man Roadside Donut Shop offers fresh cider doughnuts double the usual size and unique treats like breakfast sandwiches, while The Donut Shack, established in 2019, now serves mini and full-sized cider doughnuts made to order to meet rising local demand.  WMUR
